Synopsis

While camping in the woods, Polly Watt and her clumsy boyfriend Seth Belzer damage their tent. They decide to spend the night in a low-budget motel. Meanwhile the criminals, Lacey Belisle and Dennis Farell, have trouble with their runaway car while heading to Platt and they walk on the lonely road. When Polly passes by Lacey, she stops the car and the couple is rendered by Dennis. However, Polly hits something in the road and while replacing the tire, they are attacked by a weird splinter. The car overheats and they stop in a gas station, where they are trapped by zombies, victims of the splinter parasite. —Claudio Carvalho, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

A better-than-expected creature feature with great practical effects! [+60%]

Splinter happens to be a reasonably enjoyable body horror flick with not-so-annoying lead characters. It starts off in a cliched style - there's the opening scene that introduces the parasite, followed by the character establishment of the two couples - one returning from a failed camping expedition and one running away from cops. The parasite somehow gets embroiled in the tussle between the couples who realize that they have a bigger, scarier common enemy at that point. The vacationing couple's chemistry is well done - it really seemed like they were in love and wanted the best for each other (also, Jill Wagner looks so pretty!). The fugitive couple is wacky and unrelenting but with a will to survive the mess they're currently in. The splinter-like fungus is the highlight of the film - the VFX team does a great job with the practical effects (they're always better than CGI). The camerawork during the climax set-piece felt too shaky at times; it never gives you one good solid look at the monster's metamorphosed state (like in The Thing). If you enjoy messy, gory films with some unexpected limb twisting and a scary-looking parasitic antagonist, Splinter ought to impress you fairly. I'd definitely love to see a sequel to this!
