Part rom-com, part buddy adventure, part time travel sci-fi
I definitely enjoyed this movie. It's more or less a romantic comedy that uses time travel to drive the story. It delivers some of the common messages and tropes you'd expect for a film with this premise, but I still found it totally enjoyable to watch. And the scene near the end with the car (you'll know it when you see it) actually had me laughing out loud!If you enjoyed "About Time" or "Being Erica," you'll probably enjoy this too. There's definitely a few loopholes/unanswered questions about how the time travel works (like linking it to his phone in the past), but you suspend disbelief and enjoy it as a story about a flawed guy trying to make things better for the girl he loves. The film's very well done and feels very polished and professional. For a straight-to-DVD movie, I was expecting less. It was better than I expected. And like I said, I really enjoyed it and would probably watch it again. However, I also feel "something's" missing, but I can't quite place my finger on what. The writing, acting, cinematography, everything is great. I guess, for a rom-com, there wasn't as strong of an "all hope is lost" moment near the end of the second act, before our hero learns his lesson, has his breakthrough, and makes a big gesture to get the girl (like you'd see in most romantic comedies). It's more of a gradual, authentic, very believable journey to where he learns his lesson and takes his big action -- but I, personally, didn't feel as much of an emotional rollercoaster like I have in other films in this genre. Maybe that's it.Still worth watching though if you like time travel or romantic comedies. I'd give it a B+. Really great high quality and solid work that's totally enjoyable, but not quite at the outstanding summer blockbuster level.
